Divergent Film Review

The new movie, Divergent, has been a hot topic of discussion, and is being played in almost every movie theater in the LMSD area. The movie has gotten phenomenal ratings and great reviews from various critics. The movie is based on the book Divergent by Veronica Roth. The movie stars phenomenal actors such as Shailene Woodley, Theo James, and Kate Winslet. The director, Neil Burger, does a magnificent job creating exciting chemistry between the actors and portraying it on screen. The movie is filled with action, tension, adventure, and romance.

The movie starts out with Beatrice Prior (Woodley) getting ready to take her aptitude test where she will be told which faction (Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Erudite, Dauntless) in which she belongs. Beatrice leads a simple life in the Abnegation faction, and feels as though she does not belong. It is not long before her life is turned upside down when she is declared a Divergent after her aptitude test — her results inconclusively indicate aptitude for three factions. She must hide this fact from everyone including her family. She switches to Dauntless where she must go through extraneous tests and succeed in order to become a true Dauntless. Along the way, she faces extremely harsh conditions, but befriends Four (James) and changes her name to Tris. Not only must she hide the fact that she is a Divergent, but she must keep Erudite faction from taking over and killing all the Abnegation faction in order to rule the city. Jeanine Mathews (Winslet), who is the leader of Erudite faction, plans to get all members of the Dauntless faction to kill them, as well as discover Divergents and kill them off.  With the help of Four, Tris must fight Jeanine, save her family, and keep the Erudites from taking over.

Needless to say, this movie is packed with action and tension. Tris faces extremely harsh conditions when she trains, and then she must use her training to rescue her family. The film also encompasses the drama and romance between Tris and Four. The film is very well executed and organized. It is very similar to The Hunger Games, and may be even better. The actors are all very talented and work tremendously with one another. Still, there are a number of differences between the movie and the book. First of all, the movie tones down some of the more violent and gory scenes. Also, there are a number of character differences — such as Four being portrayed as much older in the movie than in the book. But, minor differences are necessary to make a film successful. What works on paper may not bode well with the movie’s audience. All in all, the movie was a success and appreciated by many. The next movie in the trilogy, Insurgent, comes out 2015!
