Girls on the Gridiron

One of Harriton’s premier events of the season returned in full force on Thursday, October 29th, during the Powderpuff Football Game. Since 2004, the Powderpuff game has quickly become one of Harriton’s greatest new traditions, and many fans and parents packed the bleachers to see the girls take center stage. Divided into teams according to grade, the players arrived with full intensity, ready to take the field and take down their peers (metaphorically, of course, as it was a flag football game). The girls did not fail to disappoint in terms of spirit, as they dressed head to toe in support of their team. There was face paint, hairspray, various other team colored accessories. It was safe to say that everyone was ready for some football.
The first game was kicked off between the blue freshman team and the lime green sophomore team. Although it was their first ever powderpuff experience, the freshmen played a strong game, losing by a score of 22-7. Caleigh Foust scored the lone touchdown for the freshman, while Ali Grady and Jess Schwab led the sophomore attack. Despite the tough loss, the morale of the freshman team, whose roster exceeded 40 girls, remained high. Led by coach Matt Scullin, they are confident that they will be able to redeem themselves next year against the incoming freshman class.
The second game was an incredibly heated matchup between the two powerhouses of the school, the pink junior team and the yellow senior team. The seniors had experienced some success in the most recent powderpuff games, but the juniors looked to end their reign of dominance. The seniors struck first, thanks to a touchdown by Alvida Clemons. The juniors were not phased however, and soon retaliated with a touchdown of their own, courtesy of Amoni Smith. As the clock ticked down, the score remained tied until senior Marissa Deguardia broke away from the junior defense, giving the seniors a 14-7 lead. This would ultimately prove to be the winning touchdown, but both sides will agree that it was an incredibly well-played game. The event was enjoyable for all players and fans, and helped a greater cause, as all proceeds went to charity. As the popularity for Powderfull football grows, one can only speculate how exciting next year’s matchups will be.
